Looking for cheap car insurance? Don't get a black box. Here's why.
Hey guys - Noah here,
I just spoke with a mate who got quoted £5,000 for his Ford Fiesta. The black box option brought it down to £1,000. Sounds great, right?
Not so fast.
Why Black Boxes Can Be Dangerous
Black boxes seem brilliant on paper. Lower premiums in exchange for proving you're a safe driver.
But here's what they don't tell you:
One small mistake could cancel your entire policy
Some black boxes restrict when you can drive (no driving after 10 PM!)
Many limit how far you can drive each year (as low as 3,000 miles)
Even minor infractions get flagged and can raise your premium
A Real Horror Story
A friend of mine had his entire policy cancelled when he drove 30mph in what had recently changed to a 20mph zone. Because he was "50% over the limit," his insurer cancelled his policy on the spot.
The worst part? After that cancellation, no other insurance company would give him a quote. Not one.
This isn't rare. I've heard dozens of similar stories from young drivers who thought they were saving money, only to end up in a much worse position.
Do You Actually Need a Black Box?
The truth is, most young drivers assume a black box is their only option for affordable insurance. But that's simply not true.
When I was looking for insurance, I managed to lower my quote by thousands without accepting those strict terms.
How to Get Cheaper Insurance Without a Black Box
Here are some tactics that worked for me and many others:
Try different job title wording Insurance companies rate risk differently based on your job title. The difference between "Chef" and "Kitchen Manager" could save you hundreds!
Add experienced named drivers Adding parents or other experienced drivers to your policy can dramatically reduce costs. I even added my girlfriend's dad and saved £600!
Choose a car in a lower insurance group Insurers place cars in groups from 1-50. Lower numbers mean lower premiums. A VW Up or Toyota Aygo will cost far less to insure than a Fiesta or Corsa.
Increase your voluntary excess Setting a higher voluntary excess tells insurers you're confident in your driving. Just make sure you could afford to pay it if needed.
Pay annually instead of monthly If you can afford it, paying the full year upfront typically saves 10-15%.
👀 The Best Money-Saving App for Insurance
Car insurance is always going to be expensive, and saving to pay for those prices can seem impossible.
I've been getting TONS of messages from you guys asking how to afford these crazy insurance prices.
So, I decided to put together a detailed guide on my eBay reselling store which helped me afford my first car's insurance → https://stan.store/noahxboa/p/ebay
Let me know if any of these tips work for you!
All the best,
Noah
